India has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council for the term 2022-24 and India now has an international forum to express its views.

India has been elected to the Economic and Social Council, one of the six main organs of the United Nations, for a term of 2022-24.

The 54-member Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development - economic, social and environmental.

It is the central forum for promoting debate and innovative thinking, building consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals.

His Excellency Munir Akram was elected the seventy-sixth President of the Economic and Social Council on 23 July 2020. This is a decision taken by all the members. Ambassador Akram is currently the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations in New York.

When the Council meets to consider the subject of a particular State, it invites the representative of that State. That representative does not have the right to vote in this particular meeting. The Council meets every year for four weeks in July and since 1998 has had another conference in April with the financial ministers of the World Bank and the International Economic Fund.

About ECOSOC:

A group of member states of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, which assists the General Assembly in international economic and social cooperation and development programs. This council strives to make international peace effective through social problems. According to this, the only solution to make peace in the world is not political.

It was established in 1945. Initially, this council had only 18 members. In 1965, the number of its members was increased to 27 by modifying the United Nations Charter and in 1971 the number of members increased to 54. The term of each member is three years. One-third of the members are relieved every year, that is, 18 members are changed every year. A relieved member can also be re-elected. Each member state has only one representative in the Economic and Social Council. The President's term is for one year and is elected by small and medium representatives of ECOSOC. Its current president is Sylvie Lsukas. The powers of the Economic and Social Council were extended in 1992.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It is responsible for coordinating the social and economic sectors of the organisation, particularly with respect to the 15 specialized agencies, five regional commissions under jurisdiction, eight functional commissions.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW or UNCSW) is a functional commission of the ECOSOC, one of the main organs of the United Nations within the United Nations. UNCSW has been described as an organ of the United Nations promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women.

India has been elected as a member of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

In the Economic and Social Council by-election, Greece, New Zealand and Denmark were elected to terms of office from January to December 2022, and Israel was elected for a term beginning January 1, 2022, until December 31, 2023. .

Earlier on June 18, 2020, India was elected as one of the non-permanent members to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) with an overwhelming majority of 184 votes out of 192 where the minimum requirement was 128.
