All India Survey on Higher Education-AISHE

 

The Ministry has released the All India Higher Education Survey AISHE Report 2019-20 today on June 10, 2021. Releasing the AISHE Report 2019-20, Union Education Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that the level of education in India has increased significantly in the last five years. In India, students have chosen BA courses more than engineering. There has been an increase of 80% in B.Ed enrollment, 60% in PhD and 30.5% in the number of universities.

The number of institutions of national importance increased by 80% (from 75 in 2015 to 135 in 2020). It is heartening that the number of PhDs has also increased by 60% in the last five years. Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said that I am happy to announce the release of All India Survey 2019-20 Report on Higher Education. As you can see, we have improved the GER, Gender Parity Index.

Background

In this survey, all the educational institutions of the country listed on the AISHE web portal have been included.

There are a total of 993 universities, 39931 colleges and 10725 stand alone institutions. Of these, 962 universities, 38179 colleges and 9190 stand alone institutions participated in the survey.

According to the AISHE report, for the first time, the University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Medical Council of India (MCI) as well as several state governments participated in the data collection for the survey.

As per the AISHE Report 2020, more number of students in India have opted for Bachelor of Arts than Engineering course. As per the AISHE Report 2020, maximum number of students are enrolled in BA. After the program B.Sc. and B.Com programme. Approximately 10 out of 196 programs cover 79% of the total students enrolled in higher education. At the undergraduate level, the highest 32.7% students are enrolled in arts, humanities and social science courses, followed by science at 16%, commerce at 14.9% and engineering and technology at 12.6%.

AISHE Report 2020 Important Points

• Foreign students come from 168 different countries from all over the world. The top 10 countries account for 63.9% of the total foreign students enrolled.

The largest share of foreign students comes from neighboring countries, with Nepal accounting for 28.1% of the total, followed by Afghanistan at 9.1%, Bangladesh at 4.6%, Bhutan at 3.8% and Sudan at 3.6%. More than 78.6% of the colleges are running in the private sector. ; Aided and unaided taken together, but this only accounts for 66.3% of the total enrollment.

• PHD. At the level, maximum number of students are in science stream followed by engineering and technology. On the other hand, social science has the highest out turn at PG level and science stream comes second.

• PHD. State Public University has the highest share of 29.8% students, followed by Institute of National Importance at 23.2%, Deemed University-Private at 13.9% and Central University at 13.6%.

• The total number of teachers is 15,03,156 out of which about 57.5% are male teachers and 42.5% are female teachers. At all India level, there are only 74 female teachers per 100 male teachers.

• Student Teacher Ratio (PTR) in universities and colleges is 28 if regular mode enrollment is considered while the PTR for universities and its constituent units is 18 for regular mode.

• Group-C has the highest share of 40.1% among non-teaching employees, followed by Group-D at 27.7%. Group-A and Group-B comprise 15.1% and 17.2% non-teaching posts respectively.

The average number of females per 100 male non-teaching staff is 51.

• 38,986 students have received Ph.D. level degree with 21,577 male and 17,409 female during 2019. At the postgraduate level, the maximum number of MA pass students is followed by MSc and MBA. Highest number of students (20.7 lakh) have graduated in Arts courses.

• BA (20.3) Lakh degree has been awarded to maximum students. B.Sc (10.6 lakhs) is second only to B.Com. (9.3 lakh).

The AISHE Report 2020 provides key performance indicators on the state of higher education in the country. The steady increase in student enrollment, number of institutions, gender equality is an indicator of India's major steps towards improving access, equity and quality in the light of National Education Policy 2020.
