Under the Stockholm Agreement of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ratification of 4 chemicals listed in sustainable organic products has been approved.
What is Permanent Organic Pollutant?
> These pollutants are chemicals that remain in the environment for a long time
> They are also capable of spreading over a geographically large area.
> These chemicals are stored in the fatty tissues of living organisms.
> These pollutants also act as poison for humans and wildlife.
> These pollutants adversely affect human health and the environment.
> These chemical pollutants are also capable of being transported over long distances in contact with permanent organic pollutants.
>Cancer can cause damage to the nervous system and immune system
> Along with this, exposure to permanent organic pollutants can also cause problems in hygiene and development of infants and children.
What is a Stock Home Agreement?
> The JJ Agreement is a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants.
> The objective of the agreement is to eliminate these pollution and reduce their emissions.
> The system is established to deal with hazardous and toxic chemicals through the Stockholm Agreement.
> In implementing the agreement, the government takes measures to destroy POPs in the environment and reduce their emissions.
> 152 countries have approved this agreement
> This agreement came into force in May 2004
> India approved the Stockholm Agreement in January 2006
> India has notified the Permanent Organic Pollutants Rules in March 2018 under the provisions of Environment Protection Act 1986 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
> These rules prohibit the manufacture and use import and export of seven chemicals.
